James Sandman Photographer

James Sandman has been working with a camera since his early teens. He switched from a film format to digital in 2002 when he visited his son Alex who was then studying in India. Since shooting in both south and northeastern India, he has traveled to Nepal, Thailand, Singapore, Israel, Paris and Venice, the latter two in workshops where he studied street photography through the Maine School of Photography.
The Artist's photography has been exhibited in numerous sites in the Merrimac Valley, including "Gatherings" at the GAR Library in West Newbury, MA in November 2006; "Paris: Beauty And The Street", at the Newburyport, MA Art Association in April 2007 as part of the Association's Featured Artists' Series; the Provident Bank's 10th Anniversary Lobby to the Arts Exhibit as one of 75 contributors in September 2007 in Amesbury, MA; and "Venice: One Day If By Land, One Lifetime If By Sea" at the Provident Bank in Newburyport, MA, showing currently through November 2007.
Recent workshops include a 10-day workshop in Rockport, ME taught by Eugene Richards of VII Photo Agency of New York City. Vicki Goldberg, New York Times film critic and historian recently called Mr. Richards perhaps the finest photographer in America today. This workshop, like the previous ones James has taken, concentrated on street photography and photojournalism.
James has been a resident of Newburyport and West Newbury, Massachusetts since 1975, is a practicing lawyer with 34 years experience and teaches worker's compensation law at the Massachusetts School of Law [see www.jsandmanlaw.com]. In addition to photography, he enjoys classical music, reading and scuba diving. He has two sons and a daughter, all of whom are accomplished in the creative arts.
James is an active member of the Newburyport Art Association and Boston Photographic Center.
